Speekee Spanish for Kids Review & Giveaway

Good morning everyone!

As a future teacher I like to keep my eyes and ears out for programs that will help my future students learn. When I am looking at activities, programs, books, etc. it is very important that these programs be engaging but also full of content that my students will be able to learn. I check to make sure it requires skills that my students have either already developed or are in the process of developing.

That being said when I went on to Speekee I was impressed! This is a website that helps children learn Spanish. Before I go into detail about the program let me emphasize how important I think it is for our students to learn Spanish. We have a lot of children in our schools who are not Native English Speakers. What this means is that English is their second language. Many of these students' first language is Spanish. (We call these students English Language Learners, ELL for short.) When an ELL student arrives in our classroom they struggle to make friends and feel comfortable because of the language barrier between not only the student and the teacher, but the student and classmates as well. If our children are learning Spanish at a young age they will be able to at least introduce themselves and make this new student feel welcome in the classroom. As these children grow they will get jobs in companies, schools, public service jobs, and it is becoming increasingly important that they speak multiple languages because our country is becoming more and more diverse.

So I was already sold on the idea of Speekee. I love that it is for kids (young kids are able to pick up languages faster than adults and teens).

When you sign your student up the parent will need to confirm that it is okay for the student to be on the site. Then once all of the signing up is out of the way the child can go on and start exploring. They start in a park and they can watch a video at each station of the park. The video is of kids, puppets, and a few adults speaking in Spanish. These videos are really great. They don't include the English words on the screen which I think is good because it forces the student to listen and look at the props and visual clues that the videos are representing.  Many of the videos have songs in them which is engaging and fun. Children can learn a lot through song! After your child watches the video, he or she can play a game that coincides with what they just watched! It is a fun way to reinforce what they learned and to make sure they really got it. Your child can watch the videos more than once too which is super helpful!

There are many sections in the game to navigate you go to the map and click an area that you'd like to visit! Then you use the arrow keys on your computer to move around to the next video and game. It is very simple, a child will definitely be able to navigate it.

Here is some information from the company:
