Startwrite Handwriting Program Review & Giveaway

Hello again everyone!

As I hope you know- I am studying to be an Elementary Education teacher. I am also currently nannying two girls (ages 7 & 11). I am always keeping my eyes peeled for products and programs that would help my (future) students!

I got the chance to try and review this program called Startwrite! This is a program that parents and teachers can use to print out handwriting worksheets. In my class on literacy at Framingham State University my professor stressed the teaching of handwriting to children- not only print but cursive as well.

How many of you remember some of your friends in high school with handwriting that is near to impossible to read? I would guess that almost all of us can! We don't want our children or our students to grow up with handwriting so bad that they have to type everything. (Imagine working in a place where you need to leave notes for your boss or employees with illegible handwriting!)

What I loved most about this program was that it was pretty simple to use! I am not the best with computer programs so I really appreciate it when companies go the extra mile to make it user friendly. I also loved the many different options. You can change the font of the writing to match whatever font the school may be using. You can have just the letters, or for beginners have numbers to instruct the child on which way to write their letters!

You can also add color by creating borders and adding images! This makes the worksheet more fun than if you were to go out and by a boring old handwriting tablet for your student!

One of the girls I nanny writes a lot of her letters and numbers backwards. I printed out a sheet of the alphabet and numbers 1-10. We sat down and she traced the figures following the order the sheet told her to. Then she wrote them on her own. She gets easily frustrated so we didn't make it through the whole sheet- but it was a start! I hope to keep working on it with her and scaffolding it so that she can eventually write her letters without the numbered guide, and then again without a guide at all.

I highly recommend this program for parents of young children learning to write, or for children on the older side who have bad handwriting or need help figuring out which way letters go.

You are never too old to work on handwriting! If your kid puts up a fight you tell them my professor made me fill out a handwriting tablet and I was 20 years old!

I also think it is good to use during the summer when children regress a little bit and forget a lot of what they learned the year before. It is important to keep them learning all year long- even if it is just practicing handwriting!

Here is some information from the company:

"Startwrite 6.0 (Windows only) is the easiest way to create customized
handwriting practice sheets for your student.
Just Type it, Print it and Practice! It’s that easy!
Startwrite 6.0 is bilingual. Spanish fonts make it easy for Spanish-speaking students to practice writing in their own language, and for English-speaking children to learn Spanish"
